“Our growth in the coming years will come from novel features that we are working continuously to present abroad. Our staff travels a lot, and we introduce them at conferences and seminars around the world,” CEO of BioNavis Oy Ltd, Johana Kuncova-Kallio, says.

SPR Navi instruments have been developed for surface analysis in a number of key application areas, expanding the use of SPR from biomolecular interactions in life sciences to new applications such as material characterization and sensor development.

“Our devices are the only ones in the world that can work with almost any material out there. We are also constantly keeping an eye out for ways to improve our products,” Kuncova-Kallio says.

BioNavis Ltd works on new applications and technologies with a number of companies and research groups. Initially, the SPR technology was only used in the development of pharmaceuticals, but for the company's MP-SPR technology the list of applications is growing continuously. In people's day-to-day lives, the development of MP-SPR technology may present itself as more functional surface features of smartphone displays, windows that stay clean, more efficient solar cells or biodegradable yet functional packaging materials, as the designers of these products gain access to better measurement data.

According to Kuncova-Kallio, one new and interesting area is cellulose, which has plenty of special uses in various fields, such as food packaging.

“In the development of a next-generation milk carton, for example, the durability and antimicrobial properties of the surface must be considered. With our equipment, the developers can measure how the various surface coatings actually work,” Kuncova-Kallio explains.

International from the start

BioNavis Oy Ltd was established in 2006, and the first SPR Navi device was brought to the market a couple of years later. The technology itself has a long research background. SPR Navi has been developed in collaboration with Dr. Janusz Sadowski who has been the main driver in the research of SPR technique at VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) for over 20 years, and Dr. Ulf Jönsson, the founder and former CEO of Biacore, the company that pioneered the use of SPR spectroscopy for protein interaction analysis.

The premises of BioNavis Oy Ltd are located in Ylöjärvi near Tampere. The operations have been global from the start, and the staff is international and highly educated.

“This is only natural: our product is a scientific device, so we do science.” The availability of the kind of experts we need is good in the Tampere region, and guests and partners visit us from around the world to see how research is done in these parts,” Kuncova-Kallio says.

Over 90% of the company’s production goes to export to Asia, Europe and increasingly to North America and the Middle East. The devices are manufactured in Finland.

“Our largest subcontractors are based in the Pirkanmaa region, and cooperation has been smooth,” Kuncova-Kallio says.
